Summary
From incidental spectator to connaisseur.
An empirical analysis of the internal stratification and the aesthetic expectations of the contemporary theatre audience
In this article, we investigate whether a theatre audience can be subdivided into different segments and in how far these segments have different aesthetic expectations towards a play. Using an extensive audience survey in theatres in Ghent (2001), we distinguish three different audiences based on the frequency of attendance: the incidental spectators, the interested participants and the core audience. We show that these audiences differ in socio-demographic composition and that they attend theatres for different reasons. Moreover, they have different aesthetic expectations vis-à-vis plays. The core audience has an inclination towards unconventional and experimental theatre, while accidental spectators generally look for entertainment and escapism, with the interested participants in between. The differences between the segments are not absolute. Instead, it is better to speak of different tendencies in reasons for attendance and aesthetic preferences.
